RSS urges new commission to ‘consider data as infrastructure’

The RSS, together with the Open Data Institute, has written a letter to the chair of the new newly created National Infrastructure Commission, urging it to consider data as infrastructure that is fundamental to the operation of a modern society and its economy.

The new commission has been created by the UK government to ‘look at the UK’s future needs for a nationally significant infrastructure […] to maintain the UK’s competitiveness amongst the G20 nations’. The RSS/ODI letter, written to the commission’s chair, Lord Adonis, says that the economic case for open data is strong, and that UK national data is key infrastructure that underpins transparency, accountability, public services, business innovation and civil society.
