As part of the ceremony Ed Parkes from Nesta and Briony Phillips from the ODI presented a review of the Open Data Challenge Series, a collaborative project run in partnership by the ODI and Nesta.

Following this, the Jobs Open Data Challenge winner was announced as Performance in Context (PiC), a project that, by matching data from applicants with open data, enables recruiters to see their applicants’ performance in context.

The night also included a presentation by the ODI’s CEO Gavin Starks, who introduced the recent ‘Who owns our data infrastructure?’ paper, that looks at what data ownership looks like and what we can expect from those that manage data that is fundamental to a functioning society.

Finally the winners in the five categories of the Open Data Awards were announced:

  • The Business Award went to Open Corporates, the largest open database of companies in the world.
  • The Individual champion award went to Mo McRoberts, Chief Technical Architect at BBC Archive Development.
  • The Social Impact Award went to BudgIT, a Nigerian civic start-up with a mission to make government budgets easier to understand for citizens.
